Onslow-Old Onslow

Old Onslow is situated on the Ashburton River 46kms from where the town is now,it was moved due to the river silting up at the river mouth ,making passage to the jetty difficult or impossible. The original old town was shifted to its present spot here at Beardon Bay, in 1925 - the began relocating the town earlier in 1913 but due to the war it was delayed. Most of the original buildings were made of galvanised iron & were dismantled or moved whole to the new site by donkey or camel teams.
There is not much left of the old town,a few stone buildings from bricks of shell & earth remain, lots of old bottles & bits & pieces that have been found by visitors & left as it is illegal to remove anything from the site.
